Questions to ask your wedding photographer before you book
A portfolio shows you someone’s best twenty photographs. It cannot show you what they are like to work with for ten hours. That part you learn by asking, and I am always glad when couples do.
Why the conversation matters more than the portfolio
Every shortlisted photographer has a beautiful highlight reel. The real differences live in the unglamorous parts: preparation, backups, and how a person behaves when the schedule slips. A short call surfaces all of it.
The five questions
Bring these to your first call and listen for specifics:
Good answers are boring, and that is the point. Calm, specific, slightly dull answers come from someone who has solved these problems many times before.
What a full gallery tells you
Ask to see a wedding that resembles yours. Same season, similar venue, similar light. Anyone can make two people in love look good at sunset. A full gallery shows what happens when conditions stop being ideal.
And one question for yourself
After the call, notice how you feel. This person will stand beside you during the most emotional hours of your life. If the conversation felt easy, that ease will be in your photographs.
Ask me anything, truly
I keep my answers to all five in writing, and I will happily walk through them before you commit to anything. Bring the hard questions. They are how good matches get made.
